Sparks from the Cosmic Flame – A review by Pat R.
‘Sparks’ consists of twelve essays written by students of Dion Fortune’s book The Cosmic Doctrine, twelve people from varying backgrounds. As Wendy Berg says in essay No.1, “The aim of the Inner Plane guides who communicated The Cosmic Doctrine to Dion Fortune was to help students form a working understanding of Cosmic Law: in other words [to see] the repeating patterns, rhythms and principles upon which the whole of our universe is based”. It is not the intention of the essays in Sparks to explain the ideas described but to show how individual people “have been inspired by its wisdom, and have applied what they have learnt to illumine their own diverse fields of work and interest” (WB). Each essay allows you to experience the teaching through someone else’s eyes. This can only be for the good. You probably won’t agree with everything that is written but even where you disagree this helps to sort out in your mind what you can accept and what you can’t. Even knowing you disagree helps remove confusion.
The essays are varied, each one providing a different approach. Each essay will reveal a different way of thinking, an alternative view, and show how aspects of The Cosmic Doctrine can be built into your own knowledge. It may be that not all the essays reflect your way of thinking but within many of them you will find a hidden gem, a positive thought which reverberates within you and helps to smooth the way.
Studying The Cosmic Doctrine is not an easy ride and for those who expect to be able to fathom and rationalise information can leave one perplexed and unsatisfied. I came to The Cosmic Doctrine many years ago from a background of scientific research. I read it and decided I couldn’t make head nor tail of it so I put it back on the shelf and there it stayed. Reading Sparks took away much of that uncertainty and inspired me to read it again, this time including the additional information from Margaret Lumley Brown which she called ‘Afterthoughts’ (Weiser 2000). The main message relayed from Sparks is that the objective of The Cosmic Doctrine is to train the mind and not inform it. Accepting this and making allowances for the fact that the information given was filtered through DF’s personal approach and was limited by the knowledge available at that time before the age of quantum physics gives a sympathetic starting point. This, added to the fact that since reading it the first time I have read a lot more from all aspects of occult literature, hopefully gaining in occult experience (as well as age), I am therefore in a better position to appreciate the view of others. For instance, I can see that the primitive interpretation of aboriginal tribes is not wrong, just limited, and in many instances more beautiful.
You will see how everyone processes it differently and that there is no right or wrong way to interpret the information. Those of you with a scientific approach may find it necessary to make some logical sense of it but the essays show how a poetic or psychological approach can add extra dimensions. They show that no-one need despair of getting something from The Cosmic Doctrine because all approaches are valid. Everyone admits it is difficult and abstruse but it seems the trick is to raise your consciousness to a higher level and let the information from The Cosmic Doctrine flow into and through your mind, grasping what you can and allowing the rest to provide images and symbols.
Remember that essentially it isn’t fact but metaphor. Allow the patterns and rhythms to flow and see what it brings for you. Sparks can give you confidence to accept the metaphors without needing strict interpretation. As for The Cosmic Doctrine, if you failed the first time, read it again. To the artistic person, don’t be put off by the apparent scientific jargon; to the scientist, don’t be put off by its apparent lack of reality; in both cases go with the beauty of the metaphor. Sparks is well worth reading and can greatly assist in making progress to gain the most from The Cosmic Doctrine.
Take a positive approach and allow The Cosmic Doctrine to train your mind with the help of the essay writers in Sparks. Take the overview, the symbols, the patterns and allow the images to flow. We are studying the inner view, the occult view and not factual meaning.
This is what I gained from reading Sparks: twelve very different essays, highly individual. All have something to offer even if it stimulates disagreement.
Maybe write your own essay and submit it to the DF website.

In the Footsteps of Dion Fortune – A Series of Connections by Naomi Ozaniec

Naomi writes:

The book is my homage to Dion Fortune who has been part of my life since the age of twelve. Like Dion Fortune, my work is written with the intention of planting the seeds of initiation by using the power of the word to act upon the consciousness of the reader as an enzyme.

"In the Footsteps of Dion Fortune" provides a broad outline of the power and purpose of an occult training, it is the work of a lifetime, a vocation and calling. DF took great pains to explain, elucidate and educate every aspect of the Path as a deepening experience with the divine. Her works form an instruction manual for the serious and dedicated student; these are the necessary principles to be lived and understood from within. Her legacy is that of a wise and skilled teacher, my work provides a guide to the corpus that she spent her life creating. It is beholden upon the Adept to leave a most special gift to those with the eyes to see and the ears to hear, in the words of transmission are the ways and means of becoming aligned with the tradition; the Great Work is an ever-open doorway; Dion Fortune stands as a guardian at the portal, holding the door open for those who seek to follow in her footsteps.

I see the Occult Conference at Glastonbury, due to take place on 20th and 21st February 2021, has fallen victim to the current circumstances. The organisers have confirmed that they have booked the dates for the next conference at Glastonbury Town Hall for 19th and 20th February 2022. Let's look forward to things being rather more settled by then (and preferably well before then).

The organisers of the Glastonbury Occult Conference have announced that the dates of the 2020 Conference are 22nd and 23rd February 2020. They are also offering 'early bird' tickets at a lower price than that for later purchases. There are no details of speakers yet so we do not know if there will be any papers specifically relevant to DF work, but this could be an event to keep an eye on.

Would you believe it? Someone in the last 86 years has ripped out DF's article 'Ceremonial Magic Unveiled' from the only copy of the relevant volume of The Occult Review held by the British Library. Fortunately it is a paper that has been reproduced by several folk on the web - and I suppose it is a tribute to DF that someone should have gone to such lengths to possess a copy of her work!

Whilst not specifically about DF, the Welsh Occult Conference, May 11 2019, at Welshpool looks to have a quite interesting programme.

Someone mentioned to me recently that this year's Dion Fortune Seminar at Glastonbury is on 7th September 2019. 'Eek!' said I (or something to the same effect) for I had it in my diary for the 14th. But it seems it is indeed the 7 September 2019. Those who might have made the same mistake as me take note.

Greetings Companions

Of all the definitions of magic - and I believe DF came up with quite a few - this one appeals to me as the best we have so far and I'm not surprised that it's so frequently quoted. It's often at the back of my mind though that I have never seen the original quotation in The London Forum and I don't know of anyone who has! I've attempted unsuccessfully to get a copy of it, and I believe the only way of checking it would be to go to the British Library and request a viewing, which I'm not able to do.

If anyone is able to do this I would be very grateful to them! It would be ironic if after all these years it turns out we're misquoting DF or even that she didn't write it at all......

Hello All

In hunting around for sources of the DF definition of magic, I came across two websites that might be of interest to folk who visit this forum.
The first is an index for the Occult Review 1905 to 1948 incorporating the London Forum Sept 1933 to April 1938. Quite a few papers by DF are listed there, along with those of many other folk.
The second webpage has links to electronic copies of the Occult Review and the London Forum (and a link to another index of the papers which folk might find more easily downloadable than that in the first link should they want to keep a copy). Unfortunately the paper with DF's definition appears to be in one of the London Forum volumes that is missing but there could be other things there to interest folk.

http://www.austheos.org.au/indices/OCCREV.HTM

http://www.iapsop.com/archive/materials/occult_review/index.html

I am hoping to get to the British Library to have a look at the papers, but that may not be for some time yet so, in the interim, if anyone knows the title of the paper that has the definition, or has an idea of the relevant year, I would be interested to know.

Hello Companions, I am looking forward to seeing some of you very soon at the Dion Fortune seminar. I am working hard on my presentation which will focus on the Tolkien mythology, and convey my hypothesis that Tolkien and DF shared a purpose in supporting the Group Mind of our land during the transition to the Age of Aquarius.

I am being prompted to include a short path working which will be a Journey into Rivendell to meet Arwen Undómiel, and I particularly welcome our Companions in this endeavour.

And hopefully for a glass or two afterwards!

Avalon Group Open for Applications.

The Avalon Group, previously known as the Gareth Knight Group, has been closed to new applicants for some years now as the group has been at full capacity.

We have been notified that Avalon are now accepting applications from those who would wish to join the working group.

Avalon has also been developing an e-course for those who would be unable to attend meetings but wish to learn more under supervision. The e-course is expected to be open to applicants around the turn of the year.

Details of both courses, and how to apply, are available on the Avalon Group website.
